Replacement Windows: Vinyl vs. Aluminum (Part 1)
If you are looking for replacement windows, you want to find windows that are attractive, have good energy efficiency, come in a variety of colors & styles, are durable, and are maintenance free . . . all at the best price! So how do you choose?
As Orange County’s leading seller and installer of replacement windows, we have helped thousands of homeowners in Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa and the surrounding area choose the best value in windows for their home.
We’ve already discussed the differences between wood and vinyl replacement windows HERE. In this article we compare aluminum windows with vinyl windows.
Aluminum vs. Vinyl Replacement Windows: Appearance
Vinyl replacement windows generally offer a more attractive appearance, with thicker frames – while aluminum windows have a more “utilitarian” overall appearance.
Many different finishes and colors are offered in vinyl window frames – with the added advantage that if they are ever scratched or chipped, the exposed parts will not show, since the material is the same throughout.
Aluminum windows must be painted to achieve a different color – meaning they are eventually prone to cracking, chipping and peeling paint. And if a painted aluminum frame is chipped or scratched, the metal will show through.
Aluminum vs. Vinyl Replacement Windows: Energy Efficiency
In the Huntington Beach area’s hot summers, thermal performance is of utmost importance in selecting replacement windows.
Vinyl replacement windows perform vastly better than aluminum windows when it comes to energy efficiency. Vinyl replacement windows provide the industry’s highest level of energy efficiency – meaning substantially lower heating and air conditioning costs.
While vinyl is an “insulator,” all metals including aluminum are “conductors.” As a result, aluminum windows are known for acting like radiators, bringing unwanted heat from the outside into the home. They also conduct cold in the same way, raising both heating and air conditioning costs.

Aluminum vs. Vinyl Replacement Windows: Noise Reduction
Many people don’t stop to think about the noise-pollution entering their home.
Because of their insulating properties, vinyl windows are more effective at noise reduction than aluminum windows, too! And that becomes an important consideration when you live near traffic, or your neighbor’s dog starts barking.
You will be amazed at how much quieter your home becomes when you install vinyl replacement windows. Many of our Huntington Beach customers report getting a better night sleep (and longer naps for their children!) once their new vinyl replacement windows have been installed.
Aluminum vs. Vinyl Replacement Windows: Durability
Vinyl replacement windows are highly resistant to scratching, cracking and marring – and do not dent. Aluminum window frames are prone to dents, as well as eventual cracking or peeling of their paint coating.
Corrosion is NOT a problem with vinyl replacement windows. However, over time, the steel or zinc fasteners used in aluminum windows are likely to react with the aluminum and corrode.
Vinyl replacement windows do not fade or pit. Aluminum replacement windows can pit, and the painted surface can fade.
