Choosing the Right Replacement Window Grids for Your Home’s Architecture

Homeowners may realize that different styles of windows are associated with different architectural eras. But when choosing replacement windows, many people do not keep in mind that the window “grids” should also be architecturally appropriate for the home’s era.

For a consistent look, it is essential to choose windows and grids that complement, rather than clash with, the design of your home. Unfortunately, many window installers are simply clueless when it comes to the architectural integrity of a home.

At Can-Do we understand and respect the importance of maintaining architectural consistency in your home. We thoughtfully and skillfully help you select the replacement windows and grids that are right for your home’s style – while still offering state of the art energy efficiency and the best prices in Costa Mess, Newport Beach & Huntington Beach.

Victorian Replacement Window Grids

As the South Bay area developed in the last century, many affluent home owners still favored the older style of ornate Victorian architecture. Typically Victorian homes have single or double hung windows.

Victorian homes built during that time period were full of every detail imaginable – including turrets, turned railings and elaborate gingerbread trim.

To complement this intricate style, many Victorian homes featured “Queen Anne” grids that divided each window into 9 panes – with a large pane in the center, surrounded by a border of small panes.  (See image below).

Victorian homes are somewhat interesting with their windows. Usually, they have no grids at all. We recommend going with either Colonial grids or none at all for a clean and traditional look for these types of homes.

Tudor Homes Replacement Window Grids

Tudor homes, though not as common in Newport and Huntington Beach, were also a sign of wealth in the previous century – and are known for lots of angles in gables and rooflines.  Traditionally angular diamond window grids were often used in Tudor homes.

However, as time progressed diamond window grids fell out of favor – primarily because they block almost all of a window’s view! On Tudor homes today, the colonial grid is considered the most favored window grid style – adding interest without obstructing the view.

Mid-Century and Modern Home Window Grids

Of course, some windows are best left “un-gridded”!

Most mid-century modern ranches – that popped-up like wildflowers in postwar California – were originally built with sliding windows. And for operational purposed, sliding windows are almost always designed without grids.

Grid-less windows are also a popular option for sleek, modern homes. If you are fortunate enough to have an ocean view in Newport or Huntington Beach, you want as wide of a window expanse as possible – without the obstruction of any grids.
